Does your stormwater system start backing up in heavy rains? A back-flowing system can also pose a huge risk to your home as the drains can flood your home causing extensive damage. This can be due to two things; a blocked pipe or where the inflow is greater than your system can outflow into a mains stormwater system or a stormwater retention basin. If the pipe is blocked, then you need a stormwater system clean; if it is the outflow, then you can do two things: increase the size of your stormwater system or install one or more stormwater pits. Stormwater pits act to better control the flow of your stormwater systems slowing its release into the mains system and reducing the risk of your system backflowing. Steves Plumbing offers comprehensive stormwater solutions and will work with you to determine how a stormwater pit will best maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of your stormwater system.
A stormwater drainage pit or sump pit is one of the best ways to manage the stormwater flow of your system. They essentially act as an overflow storage system greatly increasing the overall capacity of your system and slowing down the flow during heavy rainfall. They are made up of a concrete pit or plastic tub with a grill roof buried at ground level often downstream from the major part of a stormwater system. Then during a heavy rain, the water from your system will fill up the stormwater pit allowing the outflow pipe to flow at a consistent pace and reduce overflowing.
There are two main reasons to get a stormwater pit the first we have touched on already and the second is a little less obvious. Firstly they are excellent at managing water flow and minimising the risk of backflowing drains keeping your home safe from stormwater. The second branches off from this and it is that a stormwater pit can be used to control where the system overflows if the inflow is too great. This can be incredibly useful as a typical stormwater system will have drains right next to your door and if these drains overflow it can have disastrous consequences either flooding your home or eroding the footings of your home. A stormwater pit has a grill on top of it and they are installed downstream from the majority of your stormwater system meaning when the system overflows it will overflow at the stormwater pit and not the rest of the system. The pit is also typically installed away from and downhill from your home better minimising the risk of flooding affecting your home. Storm water pits are one of the cheapest ways to improve your stormwater system and protect your home from water damage.

If your system is backflowing it may not be because you need a stormwater pit but because your system is blocked up and needs unblocking or cleaning. As drainage systems are low to the ground they can be exceptionally susceptible to blockages and debris buildups. This means that it is good practice to have your stormwater drainage systems cleaned at least once a year preferably before summer this way you won't be surprised by a blocked pipe during the first storm of summer. On top of drain unblocking and cleaning Steves Plumbing also offers no-dig drain repairs in case you have a root intrusion or a stormwater pipe has been damaged by a blockage or debris. This lets us reline the pipe keeping roots and debris out without having to dig the backyard.
